Thorncliffe Park and Flemingdon Park, Toronto

Connected by a bridge over the beautiful Don Valley ravine system, the towers of Thorncliffe Park and Flemingdon Park rise up from the trees when seen from afar. These communities were built in the 1950’s as Toronto’s first tower communities. Today Thorncliffe and Flemingdon are densely populated, vibrant multicultural neighbourhoods.

Since January 2014, we have been working in collaboration with local organizations  (see partner listing at bottom of page) and residents to help build a citizen-led Neighbourhood Plan for these communities that is grounded in their own vision. On May 31st, 2016 we released this Neighbourhood Plan, which highlights three specific impact areas for improving local public spaces and streets to encourage active and healthy lifestyles:

  1. Improve access to the Don Valley Ravine and other green spaces
  2. Transform Overlea Blvd. into a Complete Street
  3. Animate spaces in between neighbourhood towers

This plan was based on our community engagement work in the neighbourhood – which is summarized in our Portrait of Thorncliffe Park and Flemingdon Park. This Portrait pulls together local statistics, experiences, desires and concerns of community members to establish common themes, needs and community assets. It was used to direct the prototyping of urban designs and interventions during our professional workshop to create a vision for the future of these neighbourhoods. These designs were then evaluated by residents through several pop-up community forums in the summer of 2015. The Plan above reflects only the ideas that got at least 75% support from residents during these events.
